# The "Click" happens...eventually.
I've always been told that I'm "smart" but there are very specific things that took me a long time to learn compared to my peers. Here's a list....
- **How to tie my shoes**
Tying shoes takes complex motor skills and a comprehension of how it actually works mechanically. It took me quite a while for this to "click" in my head. However, I remember the day I FINALLY did it by myself. I was in 1st grade and I was in the gymnasium either after PE or after lunch. We were lining up and I noticed my shoe was untied. It took me a minute, but I sort of sat down by myself and worked on it until it clicked and I actually tied my own shoe. I was SOOOOO freaking proud of myself.
- **How to ride a bike without training wheels**
This is something I worked at for at least two years. It wasn't until I was almost 8 years old that I finally was able to ride without training wheels. And this happened in the blink of an eye when I had no parent around me. I just started _going_ and once I did, it all clicked for me.
- **How to put contacts in**
In middle school, I was determined to get rid of my thick glasses. I hated them and I was so happy when my mom finally said I could get contacts. So, we had the appointment and then came the hard part...learning how to put them in. The assistant at the eye clinic sat with me for nearly two hours trying to teach me how to stick these things into my eyes and eventually we had to call it a day.
So, I returned the next day, even more determined than the last. I had all night to think about the mechanics of it all, to go through the steps in my head. I was ready. And so, the assistant showed me again and again I failed. So, she told me to keep practicing on my own while she did a few things around the clinic. I took a deep breath and tried again. Nope. And again. Nope. And again. Yes! Finally! One contact in my eye! Then the other side! I walked out to show her and she was so happy that I finally got it. After that, it became like second nature to me and within a few months of getting contacts, I didn't even need a mirror anymore.
